Tips for parents wanting to help 4 year old learn at home?

Does anyone have any tips for supporting our little ones now that they are in preschool? We try teaching what we can at home, but want to be able to support what they are learning in school.

Get involved in your kids' learning. We enjoy our daycare becuse the teacher keeps up a bulletin board and sends a copy of their calendar home each month. We also make it a point to have chats with the kids around dinner and bath time. Ask your kids open ended questions
about what they are learning or what they seem to take interest in. We also listen to who and what they are interetsed in and do our own deeper research into the chraracter or cartoon animal they may be into. For example, last year the kids were really into trains so in the
winter when their teachers were teaching about winter and cold weather, we were able to read the Polar Express at home each night before bed. Even though it got old really quick, our kids were able to learn sight word sand got plenty of practice with spelling simple words mentioned frequently in the book. Consistency is key!

Reinforce whatever it is your kids are learning as much as possible. If they
are practicing directional terms use directional terms around the house and during family time. This will further familiarize your kids with the terms
and give you the opportuity to correct or positively redirect any they may be confused or troubled by without a negative experience for your little one. Another thing we did which helped a lot without even trying was hanging our kids' artwork. Displaying their art like in museums helps boost conficence and gives the kids a chance to tell about their work. Next to their pictures we add a few questions adults can ask to encourage thinking and support communication. Every now and then we mix in our own creations focusing on specific things we want our kids to
learn. Sometimes certain therories or schools of thoughts are a bit complex for us to explain to our kids so we make abstract art to help guide these difficult conversations. Some collages we recently prepared were: law enforcement and the armed forces, fall and holidays like Halloween
and Thanksgiving (which some people celebrate while others may have different beliefs), and one on diversity and disabilities. Mixing these bigger picture abstract art pieces in between their schoolwork
gives the kids the opportunity to approach these pieces as they familiarize themselves with and become more comfortable with.
