Temper tantrums are a normal part of early childhood. Young children are still learning how to identify, express, and regulate their emotions. While tantrums can be challenging, they are often a child's way of communicating that they are feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, tired, or unable to express their needs.
Here are a few ways you can support your child through big emotions:

🧸 Stay calm. Children look to adults for reassurance. Responding with a calm voice and demeanor helps them feel safe.

💛 Acknowledge their feelings. Try saying, "I see you're feeling frustrated," or "It's okay to feel upset." Naming emotions helps children learn emotional awareness.

🫂 Offer comfort without giving in to unsafe or inappropriate behavior. Let your child know you're there for them while maintaining consistent boundaries.

🗣️ Teach calming strategies. Practice taking deep breaths, counting to five, hugging a stuffed animal, or using a designated calm-down space.

⏰ Be proactive. Many tantrums can be prevented by maintaining routines, ensuring children get enough sleep, offering healthy snacks, and giving advance warnings before transitions.

👏 Praise positive behavior. Celebrate moments when your child uses words to express their feelings or calms themselves in a healthy way.
Remember, learning to regulate emotions is a skill that develops over time. With patience, consistency, and loving guidance, children build the confidence and tools they need to manage their emotions.
