Within my seven years of childcare and visiting over 30 schools this past year to take portraits/class photos, I have learned to communicate with children across the spectrum. There are specific techniques that work across the board, such as giving the child options so they feel more in control and grounding exercises for when the child is in distress (Taught to me by child and trauma therapist colleagues).
Every child is different and it is important for me to understand them as an individual. The way of self-expression I have often taught to children I watch over is art. It is a planned activity the children love to do and I do my best to pick themes that will engage their interests.
