Have you ever wondered why your preschooler can go from completely happy to having a meltdown over something that seems so small? π©
A missing snack. The wrong cup. Putting on shoes. Leaving the playground.
To us, it may seem like a little thing, but to a preschooler, that feeling can be HUGE.
π§ Preschoolers are still developing the ability to:
β’ Manage strong emotions
β’ Use words when they're frustrated
β’ Wait and be patient
β’ Handle disappointment
β’ Calm themselves down
Instead of immediately saying, βStop cryingβ or βYou're okay,β try helping them name what they're feeling:
π¬ βYou're really upset because we have to leave the park.β
Then set the boundary:
π¬ βIt's okay to be mad. It's not okay to hit.β
And finally, help them regulate:
π€ βI'm right here. Let's take some deep breaths together.β
β¨ Remember: You don't have to stop every big emotion. Your job is to help your child learn how to move through it.
