After being a mother myself to a successful child, I have learned to make learning into play. Children have short attention spans until they find something they love to do. Giving them many options and making the learning process exciting and fun creates a well developed child. IE: when they are not busy they will be helping me string my harp:-) I also will be teaching them creative math (I sing:-) and will spend time with the child learning their interests so they can have many interests to focus on.
I learned quite a bit ( and a bit of an advantage) studying with my mother while she went through Collage. My father put her through school. So "Mom's homework" was an important time in our family.
