PARENTING HACKS

Parenting Hack: Give Choices to Reduce Toddler Power Struggles

Toddlers are learning independence, and sometimes that comes with saying "no" to everything! One simple way to reduce tantrums and encourage cooperation is to offer two acceptable choices.

Instead of saying:
❌ "Put your shoes on."

Try:
βœ… "Would you like to wear your blue shoes or your red shoes?"

Instead of:
❌ "It's time to brush your teeth."

Try:
βœ… "Do you want to use the dinosaur toothbrush or the unicorn toothbrush?"

Giving children simple choices helps them:
🌟 Feel more independent.
🌟 Build decision-making skills.
🌟 Reduce power struggles.
🌟 Encourage cooperation while parents maintain healthy boundaries.

Remember, the choices should always be options you're comfortable with. Your child gets to choose how, while you decide what.

At Huerta Family Child Care, we use positive guidance strategies that help children develop confidence, independence, and problem-solving skills in a supportive environment. Small changes in how we communicate can make a big difference!
