I have been working with kids since I was a kid myself! My first job was as a camp counselor for ages 4-6, from when I was 15 to 18 years old. When I moved to Vermont I worked for the YMCA as an after-school caretaker and camp counselor from October 2018 until March 2020. I worked primarily with ages 8-10 but in the summers my groups ranged from 7 year-olds to 14 year-olds. The maximum ratio allowed was 13:1 but this wasn't always held up and I became well versed in managing large groups of unruly kids. My best skills are definitely in befriending or becoming a confidant with a pupil and translating from adult language to kids' terms. I believe in a somewhat Socratic method in which I help children arrive at their own conclusion but guide them through the processes of reaching it; this goes for humanities, mathematics, and even interpersonal skills. Choice language and a clear understanding of consequences (positive or negative) are my tenants.
