when i was 15 i worked for a single mom who had a 2 year old son that needed to be attended to while she went to work and i did that for just the summer of 2014. in 2018 i worked at Montgomery County ARC in Amsterdam New York for 3 years as a DSP (Direct Support Professional) where the skills and qualifications i provided at hand were willingness to learn and progress, communication, hard working, motivation, adaptability, problem solving, patience, organizational skills, teamwork,active listening, creativity, decision making, collaboration, trust, interpersonal communication, time management & reliability. In much relation to a NANNY/BABYSITTER, you need to have patience and a way of being understanding! it’s important! An individual’s behavior might determine the pace or progress of certain tasks, life skills, and habits. having compassion goes a long way! individuals need to know that you are trustworthy and reliable, which includes having your individuals back and always being/lending a helping hand when needed and wanted! adaptability is also very important because this job comes with more than just adapting and readjusting to new activities and new environment, some individuals moods and actions are likely to fluctuate as well! reliability and attentiveness are qualifications and skills you should have as a DSP. individuals receiving care will be grateful for a Direct Support Professional who is present and attentive to their needs. This isn’t just in the case of emergencies, but also to build the relationship and make for better outcomes! As a DSP myself you get to spend a lot of time with them and get to know individuals you care for in ways others do not and can tell when something isn’t right. When DSPs are patient, compassionate, adaptable, and reliable, they are equipped to do right by the individuals the support and their families.
