Hi! I’ve just began working in the professional realm of childcare, at an athletic club in North Beaverton. However I’ve been taking care of kids for over 5 years. I used to watch my cousins everyday for the span of Covid, helping them with school, cleaning their rooms, managing their chores, getting the laundry done, and making dinner. Their mom worked overtime and I was staying with the to help out them and my family’s restaurant. Before that I watched my other cousins most weekends and they’re all around the same age 11/12/13 now but when I began caring for them they were younger. It was a bit of a different situation because it was family. But with my aunt during Covid Id had primarily taken over the part of homekeeper and keeping the kids together and in a routine, making sure there was groceries and clean laundry and taking the kids to go do fun activities on the weekend. While living there we had taken in a little girl who was 6, now turned 7. She had come from a home of neglect and drug abuse and was very underdeveloped, socially, mentally, and physically. She was definitely a tough one, but overtime she got better in a more stable situation and we got better and handling her when she wasn’t doing okay, she tended to have a lot emotional outbursts and random potty accidents. She’s a sweet girl though, helped me learn a lot about patience and understanding how different all kids can react to the same thing and the way they process things. Now I work in childcare at a gym for parents who are working out, only when they are in the gym. We have all the same responsibilities as a “babysitting job” just in a more daycare like environment. And the kids get to lead, we don’t have scheduled activities other than events so we let them lead us while interacting, they bring snack and we have a potty training area and bathroom. We do all sorts of crafts and games as well. Sometimes we get a kid who’s not in the mood to listen, but taken them into a separate area and just talking with them about what’s going on with them has worked every time with me. We have 1 autistic child who comes in the afternoons and we juggle making sure he’s doing okay during our busy hours of the day, while also keeping the kids safe and entertained. So I’ve been in many situations with all sorts of kids and feel well experienced and enjoy being around the kids because it always lighthearted work. And you feel like you are doing something important just by the kid having a smile on their face, and knowing you’re helping make a happy experience or memory, it’s the best when they’ve had such a good time they don’t want to leave. It’s the sweetest feeling.
